FDA Consulting And Gardasil Vaccine For Boys

HPV or human Papillomavirus is responsible for genital warts, penile and anal cancer in men. Penile and anal cancers are rare however genital warts affect 200 in every hundred thousand men. An FDA advisory committee has recently voted to recommend a new HPV virus for use in men aged between 19 and 26.

Four strains of HPV which is sexually transmitted, are targeted by the Gardasil vaccine. 70% or cervical cancer in women is caused by strains 16 and 18 of HPV and 90% of genital wart cases are caused by strains 6 and 11.

The committee voted unanimously with one absentee vote to recommend the vaccine in 19 to 26 year old males and 7 to 1 that the vaccine was safe for that age group. 5000 men in the age category were tested in clinical trials across the world. There were three trials in total.

Three shots were given to each participant over a 6 month period, tested against a placebo group. They were medically tested for the HPV infection by independent healthcare officials. Gardasil’s effectiveness was 89% in men who had never experienced HPV before.

The FDA does not have to follow the recommendation of its advisory committees but it usually does and as there were no serious side effects it is more likely the recommendation will be accepted. FDA consulting will determine whether the advisory committees’ recommendations will be followed. Females already receive a Gardasil HPV vaccine between the ages of 9 and 26 to prevent them developing cervical cancer. Some countries are also already using the Gardasil vaccine in boys and there have been no safety issues reported in any reports surrounding the vaccine.

Hit Like A Train

My wife had her very first (and most frightening) panic attack while she was out driving in our car. As you can imagine it could have resulted in a nasty end for us both. As soon as we knew we were safe and the initial shock had died down, shock for us both I might add. We made an appointment to see our doctor.

After the lecture that it’s all in her head we eventually got prescribed beta blockers. I say “we” because even though it was my wife having it, I was feeling like part of it all. If that makes any sense. The drugs would slow her heart rate and stop the onset of the attacks, fingers crossed.

We tentatively went out in the car again and sure enough at the same junction my wife started to feel an attack coming on. The result was a panic attack but with a calm heart rate. She described it as worse than normal as she felt both out of control and calm at the same time.

Stick The Drugs In The Trash

I drove us home and we threw the drugs into the trash. A full 9 months went by and she never drove the car once. She never had a panic attack either, which was a mixed blessing.

She was determined we couldn’t allow the situation to continue. Not driving wasn’t a long term option for her. I went on the web and did a bit of digging. We tried a few different things, with mixed results. Nothing really did the trick of stopping them completely.

We Tried ‘Em All

I came across yet another “system” that claimed to be a magic bullet. As we had tried everything we found so far we tried this also. Initial results were ok. We knew any success was because of the method and not the drugs, which she wasn’t taking. The first attempt at driving and she got the overwhelming senses of an attack coming.
